Why Non-Californians Hate California So Much

Famous Landmark Hollywood Sign In Los Angeles California.

California always receives so much hate from non-residents. Could it be because of politics, high housing costs, traffic, or something else? Well, non-Californians fault these 12 things.

Expensive Cost of Living

California ranks high among the states with high cost of living. The steep taxes, housing, and products and services are reasons Californians relocate to other states, while non-Californians resent their time there.

Feels Like 4 to 5 States Rolled Into One

California is the most populous US state, so it seems like five states rolled into one. Plus, it gets hate from non-residents because it is home to a large number of immigrants.

For Liberal Policies

“Republicans hate California because it has a strong (prominent, influential, news-worthy) democratic government,” writes a poster.

Unchecked Crime and Homelessness

Non-Californians mention the state has high rates of crime and homelessness. These problems, however, are caused by the high cost of living. Meanwhile, Californians argue the rate of crime and homelessness is just as high as other states.

Tech and Media Are Centered in the State

The reputation of these high-earning industries in California also makes some people hate the state.

Always in the News

Also, California is always in the news, unlike other states that are rarely mentioned. However, some users mention that this is normal, considering it has the highest population in the US and is the fourth largest economy in the world.

People in Some Select Cities Are Oblivious to Reality

Non-Californians explain many Californians live in a bubble and are oblivious to reality. Plus, they have a “Holier than Thou attitude.”

A commentator says, “Almost anyone I’ve met from California has a superiority complex. Despite being the most populous state in the union, they act like it makes them special.”

Californian Culture

California projects its culture through media and big tech, and thus has a largely disproportionate cultural impact in the US and the entire world, yet it only has 40 million people. Californians think their state is the best even if they never lived or visited anywhere else, and are extremely arrogant regarding local patriotism,” shares a San Diego resident.

Elitism and Inability to Take Any Criticism

California is also hated because it’s home to snotty rich elites who brag about where they were born. Moreover, Californians cannot take criticism without justifying or making deflecting statements.

Can’t Stop Whining About How Much Better California Is

Others hate how Californians are condescending, swearing there’s no better place to live than Cali. Moreover, when they move to other states, they strive to change everything to resemble California.

Lack of Proper Infrastructure

California is also plagued with aging roads and bridges, subpar rail infrastructure, and limited traffic-reducing measures despite the state’s high taxes.

Traffic Is Bad

“Traffic in LA/Orange County and Bay Area is so bad it takes more than an hour to get anywhere,” reports a poster.

Other non-residents mention Californians are terrible drivers who don’t follow traffic rules. One says, “Californians drive like absolute incompetent people, and even as a native in a relatively rural area, I’m driven insane by our/their driving habits. They don’t stop fully at stop signs or use blinkers. Also, don’t use a merge lane to cut traffic.”
