Herbs

Have you ever noticed how fresh herbs are too expensive during winter? You can avoid feeling the pinch by growing yours. “Herbs are easy to grow, even in hydroponics, and are so expensive when you often just need a tablespoon or two at a time,” says a poster.  

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are also easy to grow, with many farmers reporting their tomatoes taste better than store-bought ones. One says, “I grow tasty heirloom ones for slicing and then paste ones for making salsa and pasta sauce each year.”

You can also cut the cost of buying butternut squash by cultivating them. One farmer reports harvesting 30 squash from a dozen vines, weighing 2-5 pounds. 

Celery

Celery is another money-saving crop that you can regrow from stalks leftover. “Put them (stalks leftovers) in water till they grow roots, then plant them,” advises a poster, “I have vermicompost, so I don’t even pay for soil. I give the worms scraps and shredded junk mail, and they make me great soil. Infinite celery glitch.”

You could also grow raspberries, as they are relatively easy to maintain. “Raspberries grow like a weed. So, once they’re established, you don’t really have to do anything except pick them,” says a poster. 

Mushrooms

Growing mushrooms is also cost-effective because it requires little time, effort, and money. A farmer who uses a log to grow mushrooms recommends, “Just drill holes into a fresh log, put in the dowels, seal the holes with wax, put the log in a shady and moist place, and leave it. Mine has been producing enoki mushrooms for years now.”

Cherries are quite expensive in stores, but you can save money by growing them. Cherry trees are less demanding than other trees and require minimal care. You could also try growing berries.

Cabbages can also become expensive, but you can grow yours for just three months. However, be keen on the watering schedule as it can prevent the cabbages from heading up.

If you’re worried about space, you can grow garlic indoors. However, ensure the plant receives enough sunlight. “Garlic is the easiest thing to grow. I grew 50 bulbs from a few heads all year, and since then, I have had almost 100 plants each year. I made minced garlic and put it in the fridge to last all year,” writes a farmer.
