10 Men’s Opinions on More and More Women Wanting to Be Child-Free
Ben Rice
With Italy recently declaring its birth rate a national emergency, the subject of parenting is a hot topic right now. The emergence of the new ’20s woman means birthing rates are plummeting across the industrialized world.
The Reason?
Who knows exactly what drives this child-free outlook, though with an aging population coming, birthing rates need to improve. An online debate about women’s parenting choices is sharing reasons why more women are going without motherhood.
1. A Life-Changing Event
“I would have to find a very special woman to commit that much time and effort to something,” begins our thread leader. There is such a risk in raising children with incompatible parents. In the worst-case scenario, the kids may go to Child Protection Services.
2. A Child Won’t Save Your Relationship
I have seen this happen too many times to mention, and it can be heartbreaking to watch children suffer. “I know a girl that got pregnant on purpose because she thought it would make her boyfriend stay,” concedes a thread contributor. Spoiler alert: they are no longer together.
3. Planning Ahead Isn’t for Everyone
One hopeful mother explains how she and her partner “talked extensively about how we would communicate, assign duties, etc.” The level of planning needed to have kids is crucial, yet many couples still rush into parenthood.
4. Think It Through
One commenter shares their tragic story of being adopted after their mother left them to the care system. Unsurprisingly, they feel strongly about parents making the wrong decision. “I will never have children,” they admit after revealing a tortured past. “Because I have seen what someone that isn’t fit enough to be a mother can cause their children.” Truly heart-crushing.
5. No Pain, No Gain
Having and raising healthy, emotionally intelligent children is extremely difficult and requires a lot of sacrifices,” says one apparent parent. “Not everyone wants that.” I wish more teenage girls in deprived areas could heed this advice. My life will never be the same since becoming a parent; I cannot imagine having that kind of pressure as a youngster.
6. Sophie’s Choice or Rosemary’s Baby?
I chuckled at this comment. Someone who shall remain unnamed keeps it blunt and preaches a reality all expectant parents must know. Those with more than one child risk the chance that at least one turns out bad: “no matter how you raise them.” Did they just say the quiet part out loud?
7. Don’t Enable Kane and Abel
I am the middle child of three brothers with an age range of five years between us, so I understand sibling rivalry. Here’s a tip: it is always punching up if you are not the oldest. Women may be turned off by seeing brothers or sisters clash at family events. However, raising them to love one another does help.
8. Freedom of Choice
“My opinion on women wanting to be child-free?” asks one bro. “That’s their choice.” He feels society should not pressure women. I am with him on this one. But, don’t you ever just meet that person you know would be a great parent? I always believe good people should be encouraged to have kids — call me old-fashioned.
9. Some Women Just Aren’t Having It
Jennifer Aniston, Rashida Jones, and Miley Cyrus all have one thing in common: they vow never to have children. For Miley, it is about the decaying planet and society; for others, it isn’t their thing. “I have zero desire to have kids in my life,” concedes one child-free commenter. “Zero desire to teach them how to walk, talk, potty-train them, and all that.”
10. Playing It Safe
Some couples are at peace knowing they lived without making a mark. “We’re not interested in passing along some legacy of ourselves,” says our final contributor discussing her relationship, “We recognize the immense responsibility and difficulty of raising kids.”This thread inspired this post.
